4Creative’s unfinished logo

Most brand systems exist to make sure the logo never changes. Channel 4’s in-house agency built one that’s never allowed to finish.

4Creative just rebuilt its identity. Most companies would lock the logo down. They did the opposite!

The new mark is a fluid “4C” monogram. It cycles through versions designed by staff at every level, from apprentices to the executive creative director. There is no single fixed version.

That is unusual as Identity systems normally exist to guarantee consistency: the same mark, everywhere, every time. A locked file, a usage manual, a compliance checklist.

4Creative built a logo that is redrawn by whoever happens to be in the building that week.

Executive Creative Director David Wigglesworth put it plainly: “4Creative isn’t one thing, and it never has been. It’s rowdy, collaborative, unpredictable and proudly Channel 4.”

Producer Jazz Stradling: “The monogram is perpetually unfinished, and I am excited to see how the design continues to evolve with new team members adding their own bespoke ‘4C.’”

Head of Design Rob Boon: “We didn’t set out to be different; it’s a result of who we are and what we have to say.”

They didn’t design a system to look collaborative, they designed one that couldn’t work any other way.

Plenty of organisations describe themselves as collaborative or flat in a culture deck, then hand out a brand system that says the exact opposite: one mark, one version, no deviation, ever.

4Creative put the culture in the mark itself.
