UK Design economy has now overtaken Retail.
Design is often treated as decoration. Something you add once the real business decisions are made.
New figures from the Design Council say that the UK design economy generated £136.7 billion in gross value added in 2023. That's 5.5% of the entire UK economy, or roughly £1 in every £20.
Between 2019 and 2023, the design economy grew 40%. The wider UK economy grew 24% in the same period.
Design has now overtaken retail. The design sector's £136.7 billion outstrips the UK retail sector's £114 billion. And in 2025, it employed 2.27 million people.
Design Council CEO Mat Hunter explained it plainly: “These figures should change the way we think about design. It is not a niche creative activity sitting at the edge of the economy; it is a £136.7 billion capability embedded in the way organisations effectively innovate, tackle complex problems and grow.”
If you commission design or brand work, the direction is clear: the businesses treating design as a core capability, not a finishing touch, are the ones growing faster than the rest of the economy. Budget for it accordingly.
